1. Arrival and Preparation (30 minutes)
Your pirts journey begins with a warm welcome and traditional herbal tea. Your pirtnieks will explain the ritual, answer questions, and help you understand what lies ahead. This is more than orientation – it’s the beginning of your mental transition from the outside world to this sacred space.
2. First Heating Session (~ 20 minutes)
The initial entry into the pirts introduces your body gradually to the heat and humidity. The temperature may reach 60-65°C, with humidity levels creating that characteristic wet sauna experience. During this session, you’ll begin to sweat and your pores will open, preparing your skin for deeper treatments.
3. Herbal Scrubs Treatment (~ 30 minutes)
Between heating sessions, your skin receives additional treatments. Salt and herbal scrubs remove dead skin. Mugwort, oak, or juniper infusions may be applied depending on your specific scrubs.
4. The Birch or oak Whisking: Heart of the Ritual (~25 minutes)
This is where pirts diverges dramatically from other sauna traditions. Fresh birch branches are used by the pirtnieks in a rhythmic whisking motion across your body. This isn’t gentle – the pirtnieks uses specific techniques passed down through generations, combining massage, rhythmical movements, and aromatherapy.
The birch leaves release essential oils when they meet hot, moist skin. This stimulates circulation, exfoliates dead skin cells, and creates an intoxicating forest aroma. The third heating session with birch whisking is considered the most important, often reaching the ritual’s peak intensity.
5. Cooling Periods
Throughout the ritual, you’ll alternate between intense heat and cooling down. In summer, this might mean entering into a natural pond. In winter, the bravest souls roll in snow. These temperature contrasts are crucial for cardiovascular benefits and are a part what makes the pirts so invigorating.
6. Honey Treatment,
Honey massage enriches the skin with vitamins and minerals.
7. Final Rest and Tea (30-45 minutes)
The ritual concludes with rest, allowing your body to stabilize. More herbal tea, conversations, and a reflection on the experiences. Many visitors report feeling simultaneously energized and deeply relaxed – a state that can last for days.
